LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. —
Today is Ascension Day, a significant holiday for many Christians, including the Amish community in Lancaster County.
If you happened to be in Lancaster today or driving through, you may have seen more horses-and-buggies on the road.
Not all Amish communities observe Ascension Day the same way.
For example, AmishAmerica.com says the community in Adams County, Indiana, take little note of the day and people go about business as usual.
Why is it so important?
Ascension Day is the 40th day after Easter. It marks Jesus’ physical ascension into heaven. Many Christians - Catholics, Lutherans Anglicans and Methodists, commemorate it. Catholics call it the Feast of the Ascension.
