Bears are on the move and looking for something to eat; help keep them out of your backyard with these simple tips

Have you spotted any black bears?

Black bears have spent the last several months not eating or drinking and surviving on their fat reserves and it's time for them to get something to eat!

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has some tips to help keep bears out of your backyard. Make sure to share this article with a friend/family member.

Take down your bird feeders.

Secure garbage, recycling, and compost by storing it indoors (e.g., closed garage) until the morning or using bear-resistant containers.

Feed pets inside. If pets must be fed outside, limit the time food is available and always clean up any mess left behind after a meal.

Always clean grills of food residue and clean out grease catches after each use.

Use electric fences to protect small livestock like chickens or apiaries.

Males are usually the first to emerge from hibernation, followed by subadults, then females with yearlings, and lastly, females with new cubs, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Now is the time to make sure your property is free of any bear attractants around your home.
