Giant to construct new 68,000 sq. foot store in vacant Bon Ton store, close Emmaus Ave. location

SALISBURY TWP., PA -

An announcement came on Tuesday that The Giant Company is laying the groundwork for a new store in Allentown.

The approximately 68,000-square-foot store is a redevelopment within the South Mall Shopping Center located at 3300 Lehigh Street in Salisbury Township. It's set to occupy the site of the former Bon-Ton department store, which closed in 2018.

“After 35 years at our current location on West Emmaus Ave., it’s time to grow our store footprint and move a little further up the road,” said John Ruane, President of The Giant Company. “A larger and updated store will allow us to offer our Allentown area families the latest amenities while underscoring our commitment to providing our customers with great value, the best quality, and friendly service they’ve come to expect from GIANT.”

Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2025 subject to obtaining all of the necessary permits and approvals, according to a press release. Specific store amenities and employment opportunities, as well as opening date, will be shared at a later date.

Upon completion of the new Salisbury Township store, the company’s current store and fuel facility located on Emmaus Avenue will close.

Currently, The GIANT Company operates seven stores and employs more than 1,400 team members in Lehigh County.
