Hazmat situation involving suspicious mail in Bethlehem prompted evacuations and street closures

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A hazmat situation involving a suspicious piece of mail in Bethlehem prompted evacuations and street closures Wednesday morning, according to a WFMZ news report.


According to WFMZ, it began at Lehigh Valley ACT, a behavioral health center in the 600 block of East Broad Street.



Bethlehem Police Department, Bethlehem Fire Department, and Bethlehem EMS responded to the area just after 9:30 a.m. for a report of a piece of suspicious mail that was received inside the building,, according to police.


Police issued a precautionary evacuation of that building and several others in the surrounding strip mall, including a daycare, according to WFMZ.


Many emergency vehicles remain on the scene.


Nearby Wood Street is also closed, according to WFMZ.

U.S. Postal Inspector's Office as well as the FBI - Allentown Office responded to assist in this investigation, according to the report.


Officials confirm that as of now, no hazards have been identified.


The investigation remains ongoing and Police say there is no danger to the public.


No injuries have been reported.
