ALLENTOWN, Pa. — According to a Facebook post on the Lehigh Valley Veterans History Project's group page, Allentown native, Richard "Dick" Schimmel passed away last Saturday at 101 years of age.

Schimmel survived the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and just this past December had recounted his experience at Pearl Harbor in an interview on Channel 69 News. He was just 19 years old when he was stationed in Hawaii during World War II.

The following was the announcement made on the Lehigh Valley Veterans History Project's Facebook group page:

"I have to share the sad news that we lost one of our best friends today, Pearl Harbor survivor, US Army Air Corps WWII veteran Richard Schimmel," Facebook group member Steve Savage wrote. "He always enjoyed spending time with fellow veterans and just telling his story and just enjoying being with friends."

"I always remember the more he picked on you, the more he liked you. God bless you, Dick. And thank you so much for your service and your friendship to our group," Savage added.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.

Funeral services have not yet been announced.
