State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on I-78 in Lower Macungie Township

LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pennsylvania State Police from the Troop M – Fogelsville Station are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred early Thursday morning on Interstate 78 Westbound in Lower Macungie Township, Lehigh County.


According to State Police, the crash happened on Thursday, March 12, 2026, around 5:11 a.m. near Mile Marker 54.1. Troopers were dispatched to the area after receiving a report of a vehicle that had gone off the roadway and into a ditch.


When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they discovered a 2005 gray Ford Mustang that had been traveling westbound on I-78. Investigators say the vehicle struck a traffic sign before leaving the roadway and coming to rest in a ditch on the right side of the highway.



The vehicle was being operated by an 18-year-old male from Upper Milford Township, Lehigh County.


The driver was transported from the scene by Cetronia Ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced deceased.


Several agencies assisted State Police at the scene, including the Lower Macungie Fire Department, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, and Yocum’s Towing.


State Police are asking the public for assistance as the investigation continues.


Anyone who may have observed the vehicle prior to the crash, or who may have video footage of the vehicle before the crash occurred, is asked to contact the Pennsylvania State Police – Fogelsville Station.


The investigation remains ongoing.
