Describing Maddie as an adventurous baby, Crystal Mendoza shared with TODAY that her daughter exudes a strong spirit and independence. Even from the beginning, Maddie displayed her determination when she removed her oxygen tubes shortly after birth, signaling her readiness to breathe unassisted.

Jun Mendoza, speaking from his office in Colorado Springs, mentioned how this aligned with Maddie's spirited and self-reliant nature.

As an official taste-tester for Gerber, 10-month-old Maddie has already explored a wide range of flavors, although sea urchin and kimchi didn't win her favor, according to her parents. Crystal and Jun, both with fathers who served in the Navy, emphasized the significance of Maddie representing military children, whose sacrifices often go unnoticed. They expressed their support for military families and their appreciation for the opportunity to shed light on their experiences.

Tarun Malkani, President and CEO of Gerber, shared his emotional response when he personally delivered the joyous news to the Mendoza family, acknowledging that it is the highlight of his role. Malkani expressed his admiration for Maddie, acknowledging that while all babies are perfect, Maddie had a special place in their hearts. He expressed pride in having her represent Gerber.

In addition to being crowned the Gerber Baby for 2023, Maddie has been awarded the title of "Chief Growing Officer," along with a wardrobe from Gerber's clothing line, a year's supply of Gerber products, and a $25,000 prize.

Gerber is also making significant contributions to charitable causes, including a $25,000 donation to the March of Dimes' maternal and infant health programs and $5,000 to Operation Homefront, which supports military families.

This year's contest introduced an exciting twist, inviting parents to submit their own baby pictures alongside professional entries.
