Dog rescued from house fire in Salisbury Twp, two cats perish

SALISBURY TWP., Pa. – Fires and heavy smoke were seen coming from the roof of a home in Salisbury Township Monday evening.

The fire first started around 11:30 pm, according to WFMZ News, and was located in the 3100 block of Lindberg Avenue.

According to Fire Chief Joshua Wells of the Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company, five people who lived at the home at the time of the fire tried to put the fire out themselves. When they were unsuccessful, they called for help, according to the news article.

Once firefighters arrived, the flames had already moved into the attic space.

A dog was able to be rescued, but two cats perished in the fire, according to Channel 69 News. The three animals were stuck inside the home.

"We were able to rescue one dog out of the house that survived," said Fire Chief Joshua Wells, Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company. "Unfortunately, two cats did perish."

Wells says when the pup came out, rescuers could tell he was suffering from a lack of oxygen.

Wells said, "We were able to put the oxygen mask around the dog's nose and they were working with the dog to get it and it was a survivable outcome fortunately."

It took about an hour and half to put the fire out and required the help of seven different departments, according to WFMZ.

The Red Cross is now stepping in.

"Some of the furniture and some of the things are salvageable, but there's a good amount of the home that was lost," Wells said.

The Salisbury Township Police Department is in charge of the investigation into what caused the fire.
