Former New York Giants offensive tackle Korey Cunningham has passed away at the age of 28, according to an announcement from the team on their X account on Friday (April 26).
The Giants wrote, "We are saddened to hear of the passing of Korey Cunningham. He was a vital part of the spirit and camaraderie of the locker room. Our thoughts are with Korey’s family, friends and teammates".
Cunningham's cause of death was not disclosed as of Friday morning and his death is under investigation, according to an article by News 12 in New York.
According to Clifton Police Detective Lt. Robert Bracken, officers responded to Cunningham’s home at 1:15 p.m. after the family had not heard from him. He says police officers forced entry into Cunningham’s home, where he was found deceased.
Bracken says there was no indication of foul play and says police cannot confirm or determine yet if Cunningham’s death was self-inflicted, according to the article.
Cunningham was born in Montevallo, Alabama, and played football for the University of Cincinnati.
He was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2018 NFL draft and played for the Giants from 2021-2022.
He initially signed with the Giants' practice squad in September 2021 and was later promoted to their active roster.
Although New York re-signed Cunningham in March 2022, his contract was terminated in July 2022 due to a non-football injury. However, he was signed again to the Giants' practice squad in October 2022 and was elevated to the active roster for their Week 12 game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Cunningham signed a reserve/future contract with the Giants last offseason but was released in August 2023.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones.
