United Airlines temporarily grounds all mainline flights nationwide Wednesday evening

United Airlines confirmed that it temporarily grounded all of its mainline flights across the country on Wednesday evening due to a technology problem.
This ground stop only affects United's mainline flights and does not impact United Express regional flights. Flights that are already airborne are continuing to their destinations as planned.
"Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports," the airline said in a statement. "We expect additional flight delays this evening as we work through this issue. Safety is our top priority, and we'll work with our customers to get them to their destinations."
It was not immediately clear what caused the disruption or how long the ground stop would remain in place.
The Federal Aviation Administration has not yet issued a statement regarding the situation.
