Riverside Drive in Lower Saucon Township reopens following train derailment

L. SAUCON TWP., Pa - Riverside Drive is reopened in Lower Saucon Township following a train derailment on Saturday.


The road reopened around 3:00 pm Monday, according to Lower Saucon Police.


According to officials, three Norfolk Southern trains were involved in Saturday's derailment.


The derailment sent two locomotives down an embankment and partially into the Lehigh River.

The incident was first reported around 7:15 a.m. Saturday near the 2200 block of Riverside Drive in the Steel City section of Lower Saucon Township.


According to preliminary information from the NTSB, an eastbound Norfolk Southern hit another Norfolk Southern train that was stopped on the same track. A third train coming in the opposite direction then hit them.


No injuries were reported, according to police.


The accident caused an unknown quantity of diesel fuel and a small quantity of polypropylene pellets to be spilled into the Lehigh River as a result of the derailment.


There were no reports of hazardous materials being released at the scene or into the Lehigh River, according to the NTSB.


NTSB investigators are reviewing data from the locomotive event recorders and downloaded data from the wayside signals, according to a report by WFMZ.


The investigation is ongoing.
